Talking about a crisis is talking about situations of conflict or problems, but is a crisis a real problem? Or could it be an opportunity? Learning to face difficulties and transform them into new opportunities, and even benefits is not only possible but highly recommended for personal and social evolution.
The word crisis is synonymous with difficulty, imbalance, distress, danger, vicissitude, change, anguish …, that is, an event that causes a profound or abrupt change.
Crises can occur in any area of life, from the affective, family, economic, social point of view, in our values or in the environment itself, as in the case of environmental crises, even in the sanitary nature – on purpose of the pandemic. In other words, a crisis is a gray cloud that cuts across the landscape.
Each person is used to a certain rhythm of life that at a given moment can be affected by a situation that creates uncertainty or forces a forced change. Faced with a scenario of danger or instability, how should we react? How should a crisis be faced?
Below we review a series of techniques and tips that allow us to face, in an assertive and effective way, crises or complicated situations to transform them into a new possibility.
Techniques for managing a crisis
1. Avoid fear
Not all crises generate unfavorable results, on the contrary, they are considered catalysts for major transformations. Hence, Albert Einstein – one of the greatest geniuses of our era – has pointed out that crises are indispensable for the progress of humanity.
Therefore, it will be up to each one to give the precise meaning to crisis situations. Some will consider it a catastrophic event, while others may assimilate it as the ideal opportunity to create, reinvent themselves, deploy an initiative, etc. You have to choose between staying locked in the problem or looking for a solution.
According to each society, fear can be interpreted from different points of view. Generally, fear is an emotion that is viewed in a negative light because of its paralyzing or frightening effect, but this is not always the case. Fear can also be our benefactor thanks to which we overcome the onslaught of evolution as humanity.
Without a doubt, no one is exempt from crises. Situations of perplexity or concern are part of our own existence. Therefore, for progress as a society, it is necessary to go through certain processes and situations of crisis or fear are part of this process. Without crisis there is no change.
We must not fear crisis, on the contrary, our attention must be focused on mastering it. But how do you manage a crisis? Crises are difficult situations to control. The most important is:
- Be aware of the existence of a crisis.
- Finding the right tools to counteract or overcome it.
Each individual has the free determination to face crises according to his perspective and own principles, either as an obstacle in the way or as a bridge to cross. Taking advantage of difficult moments will allow us to move towards a solution that can even be transformed into benefit.
2. Stay calm
Staying calm and not anticipating events is an alternative that allows us to resist situations and make them more bearable. It is not about adopting a passive or inactive attitude, but about knowing how to handle impulses and having self-control in adverse situations.
This allows us to have clarity in our thoughts when making decisions. The overwhelmed and desperate thoughts are not the best allies to act as you deserve. Maintaining peace of mind under pressure will be the difference between hitting or missing.
3. Do not be a victim of circumstances
In times of crisis it is common to adopt an attitude of victimhood, either voluntarily or involuntarily. Becoming a martyr in no way solves the problem, but only aggravates it. Crisis scenarios must be faced by facing them in a constructive and balanced way, without blaming others for our own decisions.
Faced with a difficult moment, ask yourself: Do you want to be the victim of a crisis or the protagonist of your own existence? Not taking responsibility for our actions or blaming others for misfortunes is the easiest way out of troubled circumstances. Seeking compassion in others does not contribute or bring anything positive.
Some countries of the world transformed crisis situations into true springboards that led them to strengthen themselves as world powers. China was able to assume a position of victim in the face of the vicissitudes it faced as a nation from the social, economic, cultural, etc; However, he did not do it.
China was able to counteract the crisis of values that plagued its society by appealing to the millennial teachings of the great sage Confucius, which significantly contributed to promoting the traditions of ethics and morals in its society. One of the most famous phrases of Confucius is:
“Our greatest glory is not in never falling, but in getting up every time we fall.”
4. Keep a positive thinking
Maintaining an optimistic attitude with positive thoughts is another of the techniques to cope with crises.
Giving a positive perspective to reality, observing it with gratitude, allows to cope with the crisis in a much easier way. This requires maintaining a balance and being aware of the facts, from an optimistic and hopeful point of view, avoiding pessimism and disappointment.
Creating habits out of reassuring and satisfying practices will turn the problem situation around. It is not about ignoring or downplaying problems, but rather giving them a sense of hope under positive and optimistic thoughts.
Transform the crisis into a new opportunity
An irrefutable truth is that new opportunities crises. All of them. That is why when a crisis appears, the ideal moment to create, invent, to unleash ingenuity, creativity and to reinvent ourselves also appears. And how we do it? Acting in a positive, effective and assertive manner.
The fear of the unknown, of new situations, of change … should not paralyze us. We must be aware that changes are necessary and that crises drive us to carry out these decisive and necessary metamorphoses in the different areas of life.
